Devlog

This is a Devlog for GoedWare Game Jam #4

It's my first time writing a devlog so it might be a little awkward, but I'll try to keep it short.

I joined this game jam with no particular idea in my, but I was excited to just be a part of it and possibly learn something new.

My first move after coming back home on the day the jam started, was to create a Trello board and brainstorm. First I focused on theme interpretation. The theme was SPACE, which I didn't like all that much, but I wrote down: Cosmos, Room, Territory, Zone, Expansion.

I was kinda tired and had no ideas coming to my mind, so for the better or worse, I stuck with Cosmos.

Next on my brainstorm table was choosing an engine. Previously I made a game with Godot for Ludum Dare and I also tried making a game for GoedWare Game Jam #2 using Unity but didn't make it. That's exactly why I chose Unity.

After that, I made a quick decision to make it a 2D game, since I never made one. That was the easy stuff. Up next was the worst ( for me, that day), coming up with a game idea.

That took me at least a couple of hours, but I wasn't actively brainstorming, just chilling and waiting for an idea to pop into my mind. After those hours I had:

  • 2D side scroller platformer in space (yes, really simple, but wait I had even simpler ideas)
  • 2D Space Shooter
  • Planet exploration game (this one was in my mind for quite a lot of time, but I'm a noob game dev, so I threw it out of the window)
  • 2D top-down medieval game where you fight for territory (same as above)

Out of all of those ideas I stuck with a 2D side scroller platformer in space. Now after a while I added that the character is going to be a farmer that is saving his cows from aliens. That came to my mind after this game came up on my youtube.

Now as for the programming and using Unity I only had basic experience, but I learned a lot during this jam. My main problem was that I couldn't do much during the week. From Monday to Thursday I was only able to implement a few functionalities, while also learning how they work. The next thing is that I should have kept the idea short, but I kept adding to it while having no time to actually add stuff physically.

All in all, I had a great time making this game. It's far from finished, but gave me some experience that I will definitely put into the next GoedWare Game Jam.
